Jinfeng School
Chongqing, China

Our participation in the international competition for the Jinfeng Nature & High Tech School of Chongqing in China is an innovative and ecological campus project, designed by ATEVE engineering and Pierre Emmanuelidis. It will be connected to the existing and planned road network, and crossed by a planned road. The site is rich in terms of landscape, with terraces, slopes, cliffs, ponds, wooded areas and fields. The main design principle is to make maximum use of the site's local resources by favoring the conservation of remarkable buildings and natural spaces. The proposal plans to preserve more than 70% of permeable natural spaces, manage the majority of the area's stormwater, fully preserve the existing natural terrain and take advantage of it in the siting of buildings, while preserving constructions of architectural, heritage or landscape interest.

Our project foresees the creation of a low-carbon green campus. Jinfeng Nature & High Tech School will be an example of sustainable development by using innovative processes, environmentally friendly building materials and innovative teaching methods. Buildings will be designed to be green and efficient, with energy, water and waste management systems. The campus will also be designed to be accessible on foot and by bike, with green spaces and places to relax outdoors.

With buildings with a maximum height of 40 meters, a densification of already built-up areas will also be implemented. The project preserves the balance between the existing urbanized area and the natural area by adapting to the characteristics of the place. The remarkable buildings will be preserved as witnesses of the history of the place and will form unexpected spaces for users, thus reinforcing the attractiveness of the campus. Other local resources will be used in order of importance: renovation, transformation, reuse, recycling and demolition. This contributes to the integration of the campus into its natural and historical environment, while respecting ecological and sustainable principles.

Wastewater will be collected and treated before being infiltrated on site through bamboo plantation systems. This innovative and patented system has the advantage of producing bamboo instead of sludge, which can be reused in construction. This reduces waste and creates a semi-collective sanitation network, while producing a renewable resource for the campus.

We also proposed an innovative hexagonal architectural form, declined on the towers and the longitudinal buildings. This hexagonal shape optimizes the amount of natural light in the rooms, and makes it possible to design an educational system with different zones in each room, accommodating different work practices.

The innovative hexagonal classroom proposed for the Jingfeng campus buildings aims to break with the traditional frontal and pyramid relationship of teaching. It makes it possible to create an educational system where the exchange between students and teachers is more egalitarian, encouraging creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm, promoting collaborative learning and the active participation of students.

This innovative education concept answers the question: "How can we learn better tomorrow?" inspired by the pedagogical principles of Freinet and Montessori. The project therefore promises to be a place of cutting-edge teaching and research, while promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle for students and staff. The campus will offer education that shows that human activity can coexist in harmony with nature, transmitting philosophical principles of life such as respect for the environment.
